As an exercise to explore SQL queries in PHP, I worked up the following site, which explores our handmade “Wellesley Movie Database” in imitation of the IMDB. Later in the semester I’m going to work up a much, much larger website and database – I’m tackling e-commerce! – but for now, I’m already loving PHP. Quick, not too dirty, useful. We transitioned back to Java for class today, though, and I’ve got to say – the cleanliness of Java makes me so happy. I missed it. </end CS nerdiness>

Andreas Lutz’s new portfolio website uses what he calls “audio-visual navigation” and requires only a webcam, microphone, and browser to use. With a combination of voice commands for selection and hand movements for navigation, the website transforms your laptop into a different kind of user interface, one that doesn’t rely on a mouse and keyboard for interaction. It’s an interesting bridge between the newest kinds of tangible user interfaces and the consumer interfaces that we’re used to dealing with every day.

ANDREAS LUTZ – Because clicking is so 90s! from andreaslutz on Vimeo.

I’m skeptical as to how well it works, so I’d like to try the site out; however, I’m in the library right now, and other students tend to frown upon using voice activated software in quiet spaces. I could probably get away with the giant hand gestures, but I don’t think I should jeopardize my relationships with the neighboring thesis carrels just yet.
