Project:Mapping Revolutionary Boston iPhone Application Prototype

Platform: Programmed in Cocoa/Objective-C with the iPhone SDK 3.0

Date: Winter 2009

Purpose: This application was designed to adapt the work done with with the Mapping Revolutionary Boston Flash Interface for mobile devices. The project explores ways to geographically sort and display historical information about revolutionary-era Boston; it is intended both to appeal to younger students and to casual tourists. As a GPS-enabled iPhone application, this limb of the project increases access to our historical data, allowing users to read or review information on-site.

Primarily, the project displays a short background on a number of different events, personalities, and locations. Upon further investigation, longer background text, images, and citations can be referenced. The entries in the project can also be sorted by theme, and background thematic information can be referenced.

With the Bostonian Society, I worked as a Web Development Intern, developing the web prototype and earning class credit in the Fall of 2008. In the summer of 2009, I worked full time on moving past the prototype and designing a final realization of the flash interface. In the fall and winter of 2009, I again worked as a intern earning class credit to develop this iPhone application displaying our historical content.

Project: “Dynamic Rehearsal” Ubiquitous Computing Interface

Platform: Programmed in C# and XAML on the Microsoft Surface

Date: Fall 2009

Purpose: Created as a group final project for a course in Tangible User Interfaces, the Dynamic Rehearsal application is an aid for theatrical productions. Traditionally, it can be difficult for a director, cast or crew member to analyze or review either a single rehearsal or progress over time without taking copious notes. Our goals is to provide analyzed data about the rehearsal process to theatrical teams, increasing their ability to learn from rehearsals and rehearsal critiques without adding additional work to their rehearsal process. The ubiquitous interface includes a video camera that films rehearsals, RFID tags that record entrances and exits of actors, computerized pens that record and interpret notes taken, and a Microsoft Surface application that allows for the review of the data collected.

Over the course of a few weeks, our team moved from brainstorming to software design to a functional prototype. Though we experimented with video cameras, RFID tags, and computerized pens, we chose to spend the bulk of our time on the surface application, which now runs on Wellesley College’s Microsoft Surface with data recorded during rehearsals for a recent college theater production. I was personally responsible for much of the interface design and development, as well as helping with the C# and XAML and creating and maintaining the project’s website.

Project: Flash-based interface designed for the Bostonian Society.

Platform: Flash CS3

Date: Fall 2008

Purpose:This interface was designed with the Bostonian Society as the prototype for the Mapping Revolutionary Boston project. The project explores ways to geographically sort and display historical information about revolutionary-era Boston; it is intended both to appeal to younger students and to casual tourists.

Primarily, the project displays a short background on a number of different events, personalities, and locations. Upon further investigation, longer background text, images, and citations can be referenced. The entries in the project can also be sorted by theme, and background thematic information can be referenced. Current locations, on a static Google map, can also be referenced.

This prototype is not fully realized (in content, not in functionality) because the team decided to move in a different direction. My final realization of the project can be found here.

With the Bostonian Society, I worked as a Web Development Intern and earned class credit in the Fall of 2008. In the summer of 2009, I worked full time on moving past this prototype and designing the final realization of the project. In the fall of 2009, I again worked as a intern earning class credit to develop an iPhone application displaying our historical content.
